HAZARD ZONE - OPEN HATCHES
OPEN HATCH SAFETY
Hatches, floor openings and deck penetrations left uncovered are one of the most common fall and dropped-object hazards on an industrial site or vessel. An open hatch at floor level is easy to miss, easy to fall into, and easy for a tool to drop through onto whoever is below.
THE SITUATION ON SITE
Deck hatches, floor gratings, manholes and inspection openings get removed for access during maintenance and often stay open longer than planned – between shifts, over a lunch break, or while a crew moves on to the next task. An open hatch with no cover and no barrier is a fall hazard for anyone crossing that area.
Below the opening, work often continues: a confined space entry, machinery, or a walkway used by other crews. A tool, part or piece of debris dropped through an open hatch can seriously injure whoever is underneath, with no warning.
COMMON HAZARDS
Falls through an unguarded opening
A hatch or floor opening with no cover and no barrier is a direct fall hazard, especially in low light, a busy work area, or when someone is focused on a task rather than the floor.
Dropped objects through the opening
Tools, parts or debris dropped through an open hatch fall directly onto whoever or whatever is below, often with no time to react.
Openings left open longer than planned
A hatch opened for a short task is easy to leave open through a shift change, break, or when the crew moves to the next job without a formal handover of the hazard.
