HAZARD ZONE - LIFTING OPERATIONS
AREAS BELOW LIFTING OPERATIONS
The space directly under and around a lift is a restricted zone for a reason: a failed sling, an unbalanced load or a dropped item falls into it without warning. Cranes, hoists and forklifts all create this zone. CableSafe’s dropped-objects barriers and tethering hooks stop tools and small parts from adding to that risk while the lift is in progress.
THE SITUATION ON SITE
Any lift moves a load through a zone that is defined the moment the load leaves the ground and stays live until it’s set back down. Cranes swing a load through an arc, mobile hoists lift straight up over a fixed point, and forklifts raise pallets above head height in warehouse aisles – all three create a space below and around the load where anyone standing is exposed to a failed sling, a shifted load or a dropped item with no warning.
The risk isn’t limited to the load itself. Riggers and operators working the lift often have loose tools, shackles and small hardware in their hands or pockets at height, and any of that can fall into the same exclusion zone the load is passing through. A dropped shackle from a rigger’s platform is a real hazard in its own right, separate from whatever the crane is actually lifting.
CableSafe supplies lift planning and HSE teams with barrier and dropped-objects equipment built for exactly this zone: physical barriers and net systems that mark and enclose the area beneath a lift, and tethering hooks that keep tools and small hardware secured to riggers and operators working near the load path.
COMMON HAZARDS
Falling load from rigging failure
A failed sling, shackle or an unbalanced load can drop without warning; anyone in the exclusion zone below is exposed the moment the load leaves the ground.
Falling tools and parts from the lift crew
Riggers and operators working near or above the load path often carry loose tools and hardware that can fall independently of whatever is being lifted.
Cables and hoses crossing the lift zone
Power, control or hydraulic leads left across the exclusion zone add a trip hazard for anyone working the lift and can foul the load path itself.
CABLESAFE SOLUTIONS
Prevenção de queda de objectos
Mark and physically enclose the exclusion zone with a guard net or a rede combinada, and catch anything that does fall with a rede de segurança contra quedas positioned below the load path.
Tool Tethering
Secure tools and small hardware carried by riggers and operators with a steel securing lanyard, so a dropped shackle or spanner never becomes a second hazard on top of the lift itself.
Segurança dos cabos
Keep power and control leads clear of the exclusion zone with 3-channel cable guards for light runs and 5-channel cable guards for bundled leads, routed away from the load path.
A ZONE THAT MOVES WITH THE LOAD
A lifting exclusion zone isn’t static – it moves with the load, which means barrier and netting equipment has to go up and come down fast, marking a new zone for each lift rather than staying fixed in one place all day.
CableSafe’s dropped-objects barriers and tool tethers are designed for exactly that pace: quick to deploy before a lift starts, and just as quick to clear once the load is set down, so the exclusion zone never slows the schedule.
WHY LIFT PLANNING TEAMS SPECIFY CABLESAFE
Westmark B.V., the company behind CableSafe, has been supplying safety hardware to industrial and construction sites since 1991 – long enough to know that a lifting exclusion zone is only as safe as the barrier actually deployed around it.
Our dropped-objects and barrier ranges are built to the standards your safety officer already checks against: EN 1263-1 for netting systems, and the general secondary-retention and dropped-objects principles behind DROPS guidance for tools and equipment used at height.
Every product ships with the documentation your HSE file needs, and our team can help you spec the right barrier and tethering combination for your lift plan.
