HAZARD ZONE - OVERHEAD PIPING
PIPE RACK SAFETY
Pipe racks route process piping, cable trays and instrumentation overhead through a plant, so maintenance work above a walkway turns any dropped tool or loose cable into a hazard for the traffic below. CableSafe’s dropped-objects barriers and cable hooks keep the rack and the route beneath it clear during maintenance.
THE SITUATION ON SITE
A pipe rack carries process piping, cable trays and instrumentation over a plant’s main walkways and access routes, often stacked several levels high. That overhead position is exactly what makes maintenance and inspection work on the rack a hazard for anyone walking the route beneath it – a dropped bolt, tool or piece of insulation has a clear drop path straight onto the walkway below.
Cable and hose routing along and beneath the rack adds a second layer of risk. Instrumentation leads, temporary power cable and hose runs for maintenance work frequently cross the same walkway the rack sits above, so a route that’s already constrained by structural steel gets more congested every time maintenance work is scheduled.
CableSafe supplies plant maintenance and HSE teams with equipment for both halves of this hazard: dropped-objects barriers and tethering hooks for work on the rack itself, and cable protection that keeps leads routed along or beneath it clear of the walkway traffic below.
COMMON HAZARDS
Dropped tools during rack maintenance and inspection
Work above a walkway on a pipe rack puts tools, bolts and hardware directly over the traffic route below, with a clear drop path once something is dislodged.
Cables and hoses routed across or beneath the rack
Instrumentation leads and temporary power or hose runs frequently cross the same walkway the rack sits above, adding to an already constrained route.
Restricted access along the rack walkway
Structural steel, piping and cable trays leave a narrow walkway beneath the rack, so any additional obstruction has an outsized effect on safe passage.
CABLESAFE SOLUTIONS
Verhinderung fallengelassener Gegenstände
Secure tools and small hardware during rack maintenance with a steel securing lanyard, and protect the walkway below with a Absturzsicherungsnetz or panel guard net.
Sicherheit am Kabel
Route instrumentation and temporary leads along or beneath the rack with 3-channel cable guards for light runs and 5-channel cable guards for bundled leads.
BUILT FOR SHORT MAINTENANCE WINDOWS
Maintenance windows on a pipe rack are often short and scheduled around a wider turnaround, so barrier and tethering equipment needs to go up fast and come down just as fast once the work is complete.
CableSafe’s dropped-objects and cable protection range is designed for exactly that pace, and every product ships with the safe working load and material documentation your maintenance permit needs to reference.
WHY PLANT MAINTENANCE TEAMS SPECIFY CABLESAFE
Westmark B.V., the company behind CableSafe, has been supplying safety hardware to process and industrial sites since 1991 – long enough to know that a pipe rack walkway can’t be closed for long without disrupting the whole plant.
Our dropped-objects and cable ranges are built to the standards your safety officer already checks against: EN 1263-1 for netting systems, and the general secondary-retention and dropped-objects principles behind DROPS guidance for tools and equipment used at height.
Every product ships with the documentation your maintenance permit needs, and our team can help you spec the right combination for your rack maintenance schedule.
