HAZARD ZONE - CRANE OPERATIONS

CRANE SAFETY

A crane moves heavy loads through a work area that keeps changing shape as the boom swings and the load travels. The main hazards are a falling load, contact between the load and people or structures, and cables or hoses left in the crane’s path. CableSafe’s cable and dropped-objects products keep the ground beneath and around the crane clear.

THE SITUATION ON SITE

A crane’s work area isn’t fixed – it moves with the boom and travels with the load, which makes it harder to manage than a static hazard zone. Tower cranes, mobile cranes and crawler cranes all share the same basic risk profile: a load suspended above ground level, moving through a swing radius that can change direction without much notice to anyone standing nearby.

Ground-level hazards compound the risk in the crane’s working area. Power and control cabling for the crane itself, along with leads from other trades working nearby, frequently cross the crane’s base and outrigger zones – exactly where operators and riggers need clear footing and clear sightlines during setup, operation and breakdown.

CableSafe supplies crane crews and site HSE teams with equipment built for this working area: cable protection that keeps leads clear of the crane base and swing radius, dropped-objects barriers for maintenance and rigging work on the crane itself, and zone-marking systems for the swing radius during active lifts.

COMMON HAZARDS

Falling load from rigging failure

A failed sling or an unbalanced load can drop without warning anywhere within the crane’s swing radius, which is why the zone below and around it needs to stay clear and controlled.

Cables and hoses at the crane base

Power, control and hydraulic leads crossing the crane base and outrigger zone are a trip hazard for operators and riggers, and can foul equipment during setup and breakdown.

Dropped tools during crane maintenance

Maintenance and inspection work on the boom, jib and cab put tools and hardware directly above the ground crew and anyone passing below.

CABLESAFE SOLUTIONS

سلامة الكابلات

Route power and control leads clear of the crane base and outrigger zone with 5-channel cable guards for bundled runs and heavy-duty cable stand to lift crossings clear of vehicle and plant traffic.

منع الأجسام الساقطة

Secure tools during boom and cab maintenance with a steel securing lanyard, and mark the swing radius or catch falling items with a شبكة أمان للحماية من السقوط or شبكة كومبي.

Zone Marking

Enclose the crane base and swing radius during setup, operation and breakdown with a guard net so ground crew and passers-by stay clear of the load path.

BUILT FOR A WORKING AREA THAT KEEPS MOVING

Crane setup and breakdown often happen on a tight schedule between lifts, so cable protection at the base needs to go down and come up quickly without slowing the crew. CableSafe’s cable guards are designed for exactly that kind of fast, repeated deployment.

The same applies to zone marking equipment – a crane’s working area changes with every job, so barrier and netting systems need to be easy to reposition rather than fixed to a single location.

WHY CRANE CREWS SPECIFY CABLESAFE

Westmark B.V., the company behind CableSafe, has been supplying safety hardware to construction and industrial sites since 1991 – long enough to know that a crane’s working area demands equipment that keeps pace with the lift schedule.

Our cable and dropped-objects ranges are built to the standards your safety officer already checks against: EN 1263-1 for netting systems, and the general secondary-retention and dropped-objects principles behind DROPS guidance for tools and equipment used at height.

Every product ships with the documentation your HSE file needs, and our team can help you spec the right combination of cable protection and zone marking for your crane operation.
